Hey everyone, i was after a bit of advice with buying a 1600. See, i'm 21
and have never actually owned a car, but have driven heaps including an STi
WRX - which i've gotta say i was quite partial to :) It's not that i didn't
want one, just that motorbikes have taken up the last 3 years of my
finances.. :) So anyway, i'm sick of being obsessed with both cars and
bikes but only having one of them, so i'm downgrading the bike and want to
buy a decent 1600.
There's something about the datto i can't explain... it just.. rocks. i'm
sure i don't need to explain it to you guys, though! but anyway, my problem
is this.. i'm only a student so i have maybe 2-3K to spend on one, and i
need something reliable enough for daily use, but yet cool/fun enough for
weekend playtime too. Bloody bikes spoil you in the fun stakes - i don't
think ANYTHING comes close to the thrill of 120rwhp/190kg's! But hey, i'm
hoping to try..
So that brings me to my next q.. am i better off buying a piece of crap for
around a grand and spend the rest on doing it up, or hope someone else has
done it right ? and could i even get something worthwhile for <3K ? I'm
not afraid of getting my hands dirty, but i only really know the basics of
car mechanics.. though i reckon a lot of my bike knowledge would be
useable. Of course, i don't want to have the car off the road 90% of the
time either.. so reliability is the key.
What should i look out for or steer clear of when it comes to buying ? ie:
lemon engines, etc.. i saw this one in the trading post and thought it
might be cool...
DATSUN 1600 1968 P510, regd 12/01, 2L, with blown head gasket, FJ25 speed,
240k diff and half shafts, 240k strutts and front end, new 240k brakes all
round, 3inch custom exhaust, and tuned extractors, twin 45m su's, turbo
sigma mags, purple paint, no rust, heaps of spares, including worked
1800, -$1000
i like the no rust factor, and twin su's on an l20 would be cool. but what
sort of $$$ are we talking to fix a blown head gasket ? Would be great if i
could squeeze a shell and drop a decent SR20det in with my $3k :) Maybe
later down the track..
OK, i probably could have said all that shit in a few sentences - hope i
didn't bore anyone :) Thanks in advance for the advice though, maybe i'll
meet up with some of you down the track if my plans come together.. cheers
:)
