Bob,

The first thing to do is join your local car club.

I have been a member for about 8 months now and have used my road car
(Datsun Stanza 2L) to do Motorkhanas, Khanacrosses, and lap-dashes etc..
The only modifications necessary to your pride and joy are;
1. A strap to tie down the bonnet.
2. A blue triangle to show the location of the battery.
3. A 1Kg Fire extingusher.
4. A helmet and sensible clothes for you.

To do the Gemini series, I just contacted the Gemini series chairman in NSW
(Paul Bailey, contact details on the nswrally.com website) and said I was
interested and did he know of any cars for sale, he knows all the histories
of all the cars so you are not going to get a lemon. It should be easy
enough to find the chairman in other states.
I don't recommend building a car as it is so cheap to buy one that is ready
prepared and set-up. Mine was priced OK but needs some work and some bits
and pieces.

The good thing about the series is that the modifications are limited and
all the cars are about the same - but all the drivers are not!
Also I was told by people that should know that if your first car is too
powerful and quick you learn to be too cautious and you only ever get 90%
out of it. With a Gemini you are so frustrated by its slowness in a
straight line :) that you attack corners 100% and learn to get the most out
of the car.

Anyway,
Modifications are;
1. Roll cage, harnesses, seats etc..
2. Control camshaft
3. Control tyre
4. Free spring and shocks.
5. Free wheels
6. Free exhaust after the exit from the manifold.
7. You can choose the best parts from the range of Geminis, ie RTS rear
swaybar, diesel 5spd 'box, TX twin exhaust manifold etc...

You also need an R3 licence to do rallies from this year on. The car club
will help you get it.
www.autospeed.com.au has atory on the series as well - worth a look.
The first event for NSW this year is Narooma on Feb23.

If you want to modify a car to rally it'd be hard to pass up a Datto though.
I'll match the Piazza upgrade story with a Bluebird strut in a Datto - but
the difference is that it cost me ~$60!
Although I've heard that there is a G180 engine that is PRC legal and is or
can be 2L - geez that'd pull hard in a little Gemini!!

Regards,
Nick
