Tuff question, They are quite different cars to drive. The Lancer was great down low, it had a smaller turbo and spooled up very quickly. This made the car very responsive, and quick in tighter situations. The WRX definitely had more horsepower, but also more lag. In a drag race the WRX would have won convincingly, and overall was the better car to drive. (more grunt and the sound of the flat four through a 3" system sounded awesome at WOT)
Biggest downside was the insurance on the WRX - $2000 a year with 60% no claim bonus, and that was through a broker who specialises in WRX's! NRMA wanted $4,500 a year and most other companies wouldn't touch it. The Lancer was much cheaper (about $1200 I think), and most companies would insure it. If I had to make a choice though - the new STI looks awesome - especially those 360mm front rotors!
