The 3CYLs are a little different when it comes to setting the points. If you are a little out then they run like crap. She is not going out with anyone. But she is also not a big fan of Datsuns.

hmmmm, under rubbing block? you sure? usually uyou set the gap between the contact points, when the rubbing is on one of the highest point of the dizzy shaft lobes.
the gap isnt really that critical, i cant remember the last time i used feeler gauges or dwell meter for points gap , usally i do it by eye , about the thikness of a cornflake box.
try this, get a vacuum gauge, get engne runnng, adjust tmng tll you get the hghest readng on the vacuum gauge , then back the dzzy tll it reads 1 inch hg, less than your highest reading.

also sounds like the dizzy iis too advanced, try retarding it a little, or whiile its runniing , adj dizzy till motor picks up in revs, then at the point when thengine starts to idle funny, back of a little.
you might have to turn off and try to start the engine , just to make sure the timing isint too adv, some time when u do it this way, it MIGHT get to much adv, then when u go to start it the engine will turn over funny, e.g rr,rr,rr rrrrrr,rr,rr,rr. it it does that, then retard it a llittle by little..

btw is your sister going out with any one????

Subject: Non Datsun Question.
Sorry about this but I am a bit desperate.
I am working on my sister's 3cyl Charade. I am having problems with the ignition setup. The points gap is supposed to be set at 0.4-0.5mm under rubbing block with points closed, I don't have a dwell meter. I do this and it runs like crap, it pings and stuff. Also the timing says to set it at 5deg, but I can tell what 5 deg is as there are no marking visible in the inspection hole. Changing the timing has no affect on the pinging. So i think it is the dwell. Any help would be apreciated. I hate 3 CYLS.
