Lochie, To test a booster. With the engine off, depress the brake pedal a number of times to expel all of the vacuum. Hold your foot down (about normal braking pressure) on the brake pedal and start the engine. If a booster is working properly the brake pedal will travel slightly towards the floor. Another problem with Bendix booster is the inline valve which is one way. The only way to test if it's working is to remove the valve or the hose and see if you can blow though it in one direction (i.e. mani end to booster end) or if you prefer to suck then it's the other way round.

I have recently installed a bendix brake booster and master cylinder. I took it for a drive after it was all done and the brakes felt pretty good. On the weekend I took it for another drive (some 2 months after I first drove it) and the brakes felt very very hard. I believe that the booster may not be working - is there any way of checking this or could something else be wrong.
