It's strange that I've seen photos of a few RWD cars with flex-joints lately too. The engine movement in a RWD car like the 1600 is to the side , which won't 'push' the exhaust rearwards like FWD engines can. So you shouldn't need a flex joint (IMHO) as long as everything is well mounted with factory type 'doughnuts' that let the exhaust move slightly and support it OK.
