Subject: RE: bottom end
Ben,
All
things being equal, like the re-bore was done to reasonable engineering
standards etc i.e. not bored oval, good quality rings and bearings were used
then it's quite reasonable to expect a good life out of a L20B series engine.
Most of the L engines still on the road would have a lot more distance on them
than yours and run with similar equipment as you propose to use and are going
fine. The L engine is very robust especially the bottom end, valve guide
wear in high mileage heads (especially A87) is about the main problem for oil
usage. I still see L engines with over 300' K's on them with original bore and
pistons that have been re-ringed a few times and still pulling good power
without a blue cloud trailing them.
If
you keep up to the recommended service intervals, i.e. don't flog it when cold
etc it should run well for a very long time. I wouldn't bother about the oil
cooler for street use as it can cause more problems than it's worth. I
recommend that you spend the money on a good 3 core radiator and thermo
or fluid coupling fan and you'll have more cooling than the engine
requires even out in the bush.
With
your suspension/body etc rebuild - plan it well in advance especially as you
wish to turbo engineer the car, it's far more cost effective to plan it right
first time and even if the turbo doesn't happen, the driving pleasure of a car
capable of handling the power of a turbo is well worth the effort. There
is a huge amount of expertise and experience to give good advice on this
list.

Terry
just wondering if my 15,000km old rebuilt l20b
bottom end (everything standard, 1mm oversize nothing balanced) would be
happy if i stick a ported closed a87 (~9.8:1) with twin 40's and a 72d cam.
wont be reving it over 6k, and i was thinking of putting a small-ish oil
cooler on it, i dont really wanna have to build a whole new motor as i'd
rather spend the money on other things like suspesion, paint etc, as it will
eventually get a turbo import. comments please??
cheers
ben
