The reason spacers are illegal is because,

1: when you bring the rim out on spacers no mater how small they are is because wheel
studs were designed to be the sise they are for one reason to be light.
There main strength is right where the wheel bolts up against the hub.
If you bring the hub out any distance the stud can bend then sheer as I have seen many
times before.

One of the main reasons they bend then sheer is because dodgy buggers do not design
them properly (The spacers that is).

If a spacer was machined up especially to fit onto the hub like a rim fits onto the
hub(fitting onto that little lip) and then there was a little lip for the rim to sit
over on the spacer there would be no problems.

The reason for this is the rim won't be able to move no matter wot you do to it.

But no one builds them right so things beak and accidents happen.
Most of the spacers I have seen are discusting they have slotted holes sso they fit
every thing.
Just imagine going over a spped hump a little to fast with your rim boolted to a flat
disk that has slotted holesthe rim and the spacer(disk) will sit together but they
normally slip of the hub making the studs bend and then some times sheer.

In Perth you can use spacers on a engineered ar that has had a engine swap to pass
this you need to have the engineer sign of on them and he has to make sure you use
hardened studs for one and that your spacers are individually built to fit your
purpose not just be a flat disk with holes in them.

In my mind there is NO REASON EVER that a Datsun that is mainly a streetcar should
ever need spacers and any one who fits them for the street just to fit bigger rim and
tyre combinations needs there head read.

If you want the extra performance of the wider tread foot print, don't be a tight arse
and buy good quality tyres that fit properly with out having too do stupid things to
your car to make bigger tyres fit.
I love my Pirelli's on my 1600 wagon thay are the best thing I have bolted onto her
since I bought her.

unlike the crappy Brigestones that were on the rear that felt like I was driving on
oily roads all the time.

Any how I hope you take every ones advice.
Especially now you may have some understanding why they are a bad thing to have on
your car.

All the best.
Rick White.

normal hub(rim fits over the number ones in the centre)

               ____________1__________1___________

Badly designed spacer centre hole too big so it doen't fit properly onto the hub
               ___________ __________

this is how a hub and spacer shold fit together.
