As for the floppy drive, if Windows won't recognise it and you can't boot from it, I'd suggest that it's seen better days and is due for replacement. Windows 2000 will be better on a K6-2 400 than Windows 98, and although 2000 will take longer to boot I think it's much better than XP. However if you really want stability, speed and security, you should probably forget about Microsoft operating systems altogether...
