Windows 2000 or XP .....perfect? What colour is the sky on your planet Adam? :)
A Linux variant can serve very nicely for a home machine and do everything a Windows machine can. The learning curve is no steeper than any other operating system. Unreal Tournament and Quake 3 Arena are the only games that work well on it though, but thats why the Playstation 2 is there!
