Sorry not worded very well.
I realise that all things being equal the thicker oil will provide frimer dampening.
However if my 20 year old datsun has the original shocks, i daresay they aren't working quite as there were 20 years ago. I can then re-oil them, but they are still 20 year old shocks. Are they stuffed anyway?
Just wondering.

Hi Ross,
Filling up with thicker oil isnt covering a problem up - the function of
a shock is to provide a damping force proportional to (vertical)
velocity, and using a thicker oil gives a higher damping force better
suited to performance. Its not done to counteract shock wear.
