It sounds like the layshaft hardening is
worn. This causes slight misalignment of the lower ratios and gives that
whine to them. Replace the layshaft and bearings before it gets
terminal. You dont get the sound in 4th because its direct drive through
the gearbox and 5th is usually hard to wear out.

Subject: dogleg box
Hi all,
Can anyone tell
me what is special about the Stanza Dogleg `box? The one i have is
supposed to have C/R 1-2-3 and normal 4-5. It also has a slight noise similar
to MGB`s and Austin Healy Sprites in 1-2-3 but not as loud. Box seems in
EC with no slop in gear stick, just took alot of getting used to changing
from 1-2 (1-4 very easy) as well as changing down, i found
R/Foot brake/acc for down shift easier.
Are these normal symptoms or have i got something special.
