I used to have a Austin Healey Sprite with a datto 1200 A12 motor and gearbox. The gearbox had a short (abour 6 inches long) shift lever and as the car weighed bugger all it went great. But after doing a few to many hard shifts into third it developed a problem where it would get stuck in third gear and you couldn't get it out. You could bash the lever as hard as you dared and it just stayed stuck. But after a few 3rd gear starts (lucky it was so light) it woulds just disengage naturally till the next time you gave it a bit too much boot.
Go figure.

sounds like the selector shaft was jammed it happened on mine too
