Mark,

OK, so it's a Bosch alternator, so I'm wondering what sort of Bosch
alternator as the terminals have funny markings on the connectors? Has it
got an internal regulator which is a small black bakelite fitting with 2
screws holding onto the back. A Bosch internal reg alternator off a Stanza
or 180B/200B/Bluebird etc only has a B+ and a D+ terminal and an Earth which
is just a screw fitting on the body. The B+ is a bolt with a 7/16" nut on
the end of it that extends out from the back and the D+ is a male spade
connector that's in a sort of a recess. The "capacitor thing" on the back is
a radio suppressor and the body is bolted to the Earth screw and the lead
end is connected to the B+ bolt.

The missing external reg plug behind the battery sounds to me like your 1600
may have had a Prince of Darkness Lucas alternator of some sort originally
out of the factory (what's the month/year on your build plate?).

I'll give you a rundown on how to wire a Bosch internal reg alternator
that's found on a Datsun or Toyota donor on a 1600 just in case you've got
the terminal markings quoted wrong in your post - if you haven't got them
wrong then I'm stumped unless it's an External reg Bosch and I haven't seen
one of those for a long time and can't remember what the terminals are
marked on them.

The big white wire from the solenoid connects to the B+ (Battery) terminal.

Disconnect the Pos battery lead before you play with the wiring as if you
short anything out you'll destroy the regulator.

What you do to get your internal reg Bosch charging is make up a lead for
the Indicator light, it doesn't have to be huge thickness (2mm or 7.5amp
will do) and fit a female spade connector and attach it to the D+ terminal.
Connect the other end to the small white/red trace wire that's near the
battery. This nearly has to be the Indicator wire as if the plug isn't there
it sounds like a PO has cut the plug clean off. There should/could be a
bunch of other wires there that were originally connected to the external
reg and some of these are live so they should be insulated. One of them is
an Ignition feed, very handy to trigger an electric fuel pump relay or
thematic fan but I digress.

Recheck the wiring is exactly as I've written and then re-connect the Pos
battery lead.

When you've done that, turn on your ignition and check that the IND light
glows. If the IND light doesn't glow then something is still wrong so don't
start up, disconnect the Pos battery lead again and get back to us. If the
IND light glows, then start her up and check the IND light goes out. If
everything is going well then turn on your lights and increase the revs to
2000 rpm or so and check that the lights get slightly brighter and then dull
a bit when you return to idle. You can check the voltage increases and
decreases at the battery with engine revs with a multi-meter if you have
one.

Good luck with it,

regards,
Terry

Subject: RE: starter/alternator/wiring troubles

Terry,

The alternator is a bosch so you know. I have managed to get the engine
running but the alternator still isn't connected up correctly. Is this
white/red trace wire that goes to the dash light very thin? I have one
behind the battery that is cut off too short to reach the alt and it doesn't
have a connecter. If this could be it, then where on the alternator should i
connect it up to?
Sorry about all the questions, but if it isn't too much trouble, could you
tell me if what i have connected up sounds correct?

 - D+ on the alternator is connected to the positive terminal on the starter
solenoid.
 - A screw sticking out of the back of the alternator is connected to earth.

At the moment there is nothing connected to D- on the alternator as there
doesn't seem to be anywhere to connect anything to!
There is a capacitor thing on the back of the alt too, i think something to
do with reducing radio feedback or something?!?

Thanks if you can look over what i've done and suggest anything, i would
really appreciate it.

Mark.
