You can greatly slow the ageing process with thorough body preparation and painting, followed by cleaning the panel joins regularly and thoroughly and always garaging.
I bought a 1600 a year ago that had always been garaged and kept in clean condition by its former (one) owner. A thorough inspection showed the only bit of rust in the whole car was a very small section under the rubber in the boot channel, caused by trapped dirt and water, hence my suggestion to remove this rubber and put a replacement on the boot lid, sealing outside the channel.
