Mark, As it did run well then it needs diagnosis/attention in the following areas - (basically a full tune and shot parts replacement.) Plugs, points and condenser (na if EI), HT leads, fuel & air filters, dizzy cap, fuel supply, tappet clearances, air leaks at inlet mani, ignition timing, mechanical advance is operational - that should do for starters.
