Sorry, I made a small typo in the original reply - "can" should have been
"can't" in the 5th sentence which changes the meaning considerably.

Terry

Subject: RE: refitting timing chain problem

Robbie,

Others have answered correctly re your question (except the reason for using
the alternate holes to fix this problem) but you may not have done anything
wrong as such especially if you used a chock to keep the adjuster in place.
I figure from your post that this A87 head wasn't the one that you took off.
The new head more than likely is thicker than the one you took off. It only
has to be thousandths of an inch thicker to produce the problem you've
encountered. If you can't entice the adjuster back in then the only way out
is to remove the drive shaft, pulley etc and front cover.

You still may have to use the optional holes to dial-in the camshaft timing
correctly. Most of us use position 2 and some use 3 even with a new chain.
The factory position 1 is set for everyday driving with no regard to getting
the best performance out of the L engine. The only proviso with which
position you use is make sure the V in the cam timing wheel isn't to the
left of the indent on the thrust plate at TDC compression stroke on #1 as
this indicates the timing is retarded and in most cases this is not what you
want.

Have fun with it.

regards
Terry

Subject: refitting timing chain problem

i am in the process of putting on an A87 head onto an l20B. i marked where
everytyhing was meant to go and where the chain lined up and all that crap,
but now* that i have tried to put the chain and cog thing back onto the cam.

it is as though the chain isn't long enough, to double check things by
trying to line up the old head and that did not make it either. i thought
the chain might be jammed a little and tried to free it up some more but it
is still 1/2 a cm to short...

what am i doing wrong?

thanks

robbie
