I had an R30 Skyline (L24 auto). It was one of the best cars I have owned.

I towed my 1600 on my 700kg trailer from sydney to Canberra and back. One really big
hill on the freeway, I had a 140km/h run at it, and by the time I got to the top I was
only doing 90km/h.

A turbo would have been brilliant.

Graeme.

I own an R30 TI 5 speed hatch. Great car but runs out of puff easily with a
load on the back. Wouldn't make a great tow car. The good thing about the
hatch was 4 wheel discs. Sedans had rear drums. The other good thing about
the hatch is that the back seat folds down to a station wagon set up. You
can carry heaps of parts/panels.

speed here, would i be best to save some $$ buying a auto 4 door and
converting it?? (i dont want a hatch, i think they look ugly) also, would
the l24e be capable of towing a car trailer with my bluey on the back??? :)

choice. Personally I'd stay with the L24E for a daily driver if I bought one
for that, they do go quiet well in manual form, they're very comfortable and
are reasonably economical for a 6. Put some decent rubber on it (it amazes
me the crap tyres that average commuter types put on their cars and then
drive to work like their on a race track these days, they seem to be either
bald or two sizes too small), anyway turn up the stereo and legally cruise
inconspicuously in a white one to work.

5 door hatch manuals seem to be a tad more exy than the 4 door auto sedans
and also most of the sedans are autos. You can get a good hatch out of the
local paper for $2.5-3.5K but the dealers still want up around $5K (I saw
one a Fyshwick recently with 300'Ks at this price) for them as long as they
pretty much look OK and you can actually drive it away, and what more they
wont budge much on the price so these things must still be in demand around
here. I'm thinking a private sale is the way to go, but things could be
different where you come from.

with them. The L24E engine seems to me to be very reliable in stock form but
the bottom end seems to me not to be built to the usual L series standards
that we enjoy on our 4's. I've seen a few of them modified to give an
increase of power in the +25% region, and most of not all of them have
grenade in one way or another, usually a conrod or gudgeon letting go. One
in particular that got the L20A turbo upgrade did it in style, and I've
never seen a bigger hole in the side of an L block before. What this bloke
then did (he's my local exhaust builder) is put a reconditioned L26 block
under a L28 head and bolted all of the L20A turbo bits back onto it. He's
modified the induction side a bit, pod and the usual stuff, nice exhaust as
you expect but not much else and it's a good performer but not what I'd call
a screamer, probably around similar performance to a stockish Z18ET in a
1600. The L20A turbo is a !
> bit small for the job me thinks, but it was a low cost upgrade and the new
engine has been reliable for over 2 years now. I don't know what EMS it's
running (I'm guessing it's also L20A-T) but I will see him tomorrow week and
can ask if you're interested.
