To open the door (providing its unlocked) you can push the bar which goes to the door handle down. If its staying locked then you move the bar which goes to the lock.
 
there is a little catch which clicks in place when the door is locked to stop the handle from doing anything. Im not sure how you would fix this problem, unless you pull off the other side so you understand how it works.
 
good luck, I hope you have skin like leather :) cos its sharp down the inside of doors.
