I noticed there wasnt much response to this question, which I originally
left, as I am not an auto electrical guru.

Is the problem likely to be caused by the fact that the Datto headlights
always have power at the light, and are operated by earthing back through
the switching mechanism?

This is a problem when fitting metal backed headlights, such as Cibies. As
soon as they are wired up to the standard light plugs, these earth through
their body, and you cant turn them off using the switch because they are
already earthed. If you don't physically disconnect the circuit this
wiring arrangement will flatten the battery. This problem is fixed by
insulating the back of headlight body from its holder. One method of doing
this is by fitting bits of flattened rubber tubing behind the lights at the
three locater points. The light then sits proud of its holder and is
insulated from it.

The better fix is to rewire the lights using a relay from the battery, then
plug into the standard vehicle lighting circuit to switch the relays only.
