I'm Trying to get hold of my Great Uncle's Ariel Red Hunter 500 with upswept pipes to restore, what a machine hey? Think they were the quickest thing around for a while when they came out.

You are talking about two different things in power (Hp or Kw) and torque (n/m or ft/lb).
A torquey engine is designed to allow good flexibility in riding with minimal gear changing. The Buell is a way to have a torquey engine that minimises shifting in a good handling frame. They were never designed to be in the superbike race and never will be. If you want a fast bike there are plenty to choose from. You can ride a Buell for more than 200km's with out your wrists breaking and collapsing from strain. Not as fast as a lot, but shit loads more fun to ride for a long time.
I have had a few superbikes in my 38 bike total. My first bike was (8 weeks wages in 1962) an Ariel Red Hunter 1952 VH 500 single.
I have more feeling for my (primitive and slow)1958 Harley Pan head chopper,
than the 812 Norton Dun stall commando, RD 350B, K1 750/4, 900 Kawasaki/4,
Katana, GSX 1100R, RD500/4, and some other primitives from the 50's, 60's,
70's and 80's.
Some bikes have names........... but my Harley has a soul :-)
Cheers, Feral Errol Very Serious
