If you use a starter button to trigger a relay that switches the starter they will last for years.Using a button to switch the starter is not the right way to do it and the switches just dont last.

You may want to look into getting the aircraft style switches which have a red cover on them.  That way that are out of harms way after starting and they can be fitted with momentry switches or constant ones.  A word of warning thou, The starter switches that you buy from marlows or super cheap etc are that good.  They work for 6 months or so and then due to the amount of current that tends to run though to the solinoid they fail, like any electrical component they have a finite life and heat is their killer.  I would stick with the key to be honest.  Ive had switches like the Honda S2000 set up and you get over it pretty quick.

hi, depends on how saftey u wanna go.......
for  the starter, get wire from pos of battery then wire to a toggle switch.
then from toggle switch , run wire to a horn type button, (momentry contact), then from horn type button run wire to terminal on solenoid (spade terminal).
if u do this way , the toggle switch will  cut the power to  horn button. there by reducing risk of accidental starting ...(maybe, thats if dont forget to  use toggle).
i dont know if ya running efi, or carb.....
but for points , run another wire  from toggle switch,(use same connection that goes from there to horn button)or wire in  another  toggle switch, to switch power of/on to coil.

Guys I have a 1600 rally car and I want to take out the ignition switch and replace it with a switch and starter button.

Before I start does anyone know how the ignition wire combinations work and what I should be connecting to the switch and what goes to the button?

I also am running the obligatory master kill switch between the battery and starter motor.
