Biggest HP I heard of for FJ20 was 900hp on an engine dyno. It all happened between 7,000 and 8,500 rpm. Engine was made for a drag car, not sure what it was though. The engine builder said it was like turning on a switch, the thing was either either on or off....no in between. It was only making some small amount of power (say 200bhp - can't remember exact figures) at 5,000rpm, then it started to climb - all hell broke loose at about 7,000rpm.   The Engine builder was Phil Rhyal (BRS Motorsports).
