First issue:
I think the bolt centres on the steering arms are closer together on the
1600 than those on the base of the Z struts. Replacing with
matching radius arms and matching steering arms could fix this.
Donor models any body?
Second issue:
As noted, the Z strut tops are smaller. The Z tops can be fitted to a
fabricated "intermediate plate" which in turn is bolted through the
original strut tower holes. By offset mounting the strut (inward and
rearward) on the intermediate plate, you can then get more negative camber and
greater caster. This is easy to do as the Z springs are a lot smaller in
diameter. Improves handling, at the expense of faster tyre
wear, (because you can go faster round corners and therefore need to stop
harder?).
If these issues are overcome, the z struts will give much lower ride
hight, bigger (240K sized) rotors with twin piston calipers, and the
aformentioned geometry improvements (for handling). You may have to
lower the steering arms with blocks under the struts to remove bump steer caused
by the outer end of the radius arm moving too high above horizontal under
bump conditions. The Z springs will be pretty
firm.
