Hi Tom
Don't know if any body else has replied but thought I would as my son is just doing his latest up grade from Webered L20 and R30 5 spd to an SR20Det. He is on a budget also and was going to run with his existing 240K struts and brakes (opposed piston calliper with 253mm rotor + 180B booster with 15/16" MCyl). I am trying to encourage him to use this fitting kit http://www.datsport.com/SR20_fitting_kit.html  and their recommended R31 struts, they obviously use different lower arms to give sufficient neg. camber and I am about to find out what wheels to suit. One obvious question is re stud pattern as R31 and 1600 are different. Hope you find their site of interest. I'm not connected in any way.
By the way did you mean Castor or Camber re strut off set. For a small -ve camber gain we removed the strut tops and redrilled and tack welded the mount bolts offset to centre. An easy job at home one Saturday afternoon.
Though the struts are shorter are the spring seats lower than on the legs you removed. Also I found that the strut tops vary in thickness from 1600 to 240K. Could this be part of the problem. When we fitted the 240K struts we decided to fit 240K springs F&R. My logic was that the 240K was heavier so we were fitting a stiffer spring set probably well matched F-R. We found that we still had to 'lower'  the springs (with the angle grinder :) I think 1 1/2 coils. Maybe you have to do the same.
Regards
Colin

Subject: 510 upgrading

I have just started rebuilding a 72 1600 SSS  with li,ited funds and have obtained a 1985 Silvia S12 1809 EFI (non turbo) for the engine with its 5spd box. I have also located 83 Skyline front struts (for spring diameter), and vented discs mounted in a modified (reversed) front cross member usinf 510 steering arms to align the ball joint pivot point in the correct postion. I have sat the motor and box in place and thought all looked OK. However, I had not noticed the Skyline strut tube is offset by approx 10mm inwards compared to the original 510 strut giving the front end a positive castor. I have'nt located a local source for the offset stut top but would like to know from someone if this will give enough adjustment to correct the error.
The other supprise is that although the Skyline sturs are 45mm shorter, with the original Skyline springs the 510 sits a lot higher than expected.
Any practical inexpensive advise would be appreciated.
Tom
