I have had my SSS for 5? years now.
Never touched my Su's
They do seem to be running a little rich right now,
but hea I can put up with that.
I have a rebiuld kit for them, just never had the
time to read manuals, work out how they work and pull them
apart.
One day I'll get around to it.
Either when she stopps running, or I strip her down
for the rebuild.

Good to get a positive report on running with
SU's. As you have done, get the butterflys balanced at idle, set the
mixture screws to the right hight and you have a long term trouble free
set of carbs, assuming they are in good mechanical condition, as your
obviously are.

and rebuilt some round-top Hitachis 7 years ago. It cost $150 in parts from
Nissan (NLA) but they have been working perfectly ever since. I ended up
getting an air-flow meter to synchronise them and that makes a hell of a
difference, especially noticeable at idle. The car used to shake when idling
until I adjusted them, now it is very smooth all through the rev range. I
could never get them right before just by listening to the induction
noise with a peice of tubing, like they say in the workshop manual. I think
this is why alot of people give up on SU's.

All of your info is correct.
One more bit of info is that "round top"
SU's were also fitted to the early "aussi devered" 180BSSS (1972/3).
The square tops came in 1974 when the anti polution regs started to come
in. In Japan they had EFI by this time. For the round top SU's,
you have to remove and check the needle numbers to varify whether they are
for a 1600SSS or an 1800SSS. Wont make a lot of difference if
you fit the a pair to the wrong engine, but dont mix
one of each together on the same manifold.
The smaller, bluey green, symetrical
looking air box is the 1600SSS.
The bigger air filter box is the 180BSSS
- these are orange, but I vaguely recollect later ones (mid 75) went
back to light blue/green like the 1600 one. It has
more hose connections for recycling engine breathers into the inlet
air and is not as symetrical in its intake tube area, which has
a higher positioned and square shaped intake hole.

Hi all,
I have a few sets of twin SU's, manifolds
and airboxes. Datsun factory air boxes (ie air filter housing) come
in either orange or a blue/green (teal?) colour. SU
carbies have either "round tops' or "square tops". Can anyone tell me
what colour box came off what car? I think Rick White has the blue/green
airbox on his 510 SSS and that the orange boxes came off the 610
SSS (180B SSS) and that the 610 SSS also had the "square top"
carbies. Is that right?
