Mark

Persist and you will find a way.

A case in point. I poked my nose down the the driveway of a "noisy
neighbour" today, to see what was making all the strange V8 noises that
blast out of his shed after 10pm, and can be heard all over our town late in
the night.
This young petrol head started a couple of years ago with a VS Statesman
V8 - which he promptly totalled.

Whilst then without licence, he started building a TA23 Celica which he has
set up for a 308 Holden with the biggest turbo I have ever seen (looks like
a truck one!). This was what I really went down the drive to check out, as
i had seen this work in progress in the driveway for some time.

He got tired of this project taking too long and he already had his licence
back, so and bought some cheap wheels, a Mazda E2000 Van. A proverbial
white van.

When I turned up he was just pulling up the engine cowl off to find out why
the 253 V8 engine in his Mazda Van had, just half an hour earlier, caught on
fire whilst being driven (fortunately near home). He has an extinguisher on
board (Quote; "Its not the first time I've had an engine catch fire"). He
put out the blaze and when her tried to restart, the engine exploded,
blowing off the hoses and bending the rocker covers outward, shearing the
screws that hold them on. All this must have been pretty exciting seeing he
was sitting on top of it in the drivers seat.

As I was about to leave him busily stripping out the engine, he apologised
for making a lot of noise at nights. I reassured him it was like music to
my ears (perhaps I'm a bit deaf) and not to worry about me, I am also a
bloke who works hard to create interesting motor vehicles in his sheds at
night - I invited him to come over to my shed when he gets his machine
mobile again.

As he started to unbolt everything to remove the motor he explained how easy
it was to install the 253 Holden into the space left by the Mazda 2 litre
four. Only one small bubble needed to be added to the engine cowel to fit
the bigger radiator's top tank. The bell housing was modified to fit to the
mazda gearbox which has proved unbreakable to date (and I've heard him
trying hard to break it!). He says its the same as a rotary Mazda box so
its pretty tough. He reckons the industrial diff in it is tough too.

I noticed he already had a new (308 V8) engine in a stand in the shed, ready
to instal into the Van - hence he wasnt too concerned about the "exploding"
253.

Quite a "Q ship" I said, using an expression that shows my age. "Is it
engineered?" I asked. "Not yet" was the reply.
Methinks he may again revisit being "without licence".
