Well from this list and from other rally guys I have taken in that various
bits are fairly fragile in 1600s.

On the other hand I know someone with a Volvo 164 who rallied it for 15
years and only recently retired the shell because it got a crack in it!

If you were going to build up a nice 1600 rally car you gotta start with a
nice shell and the damn things are just worth too much. Plus its way cooler
to see a worked 1600 with wicked paint and an FJ with nice shiny Simmons...

Talking of WRX's - this is something that we considered but 4wd and turbo
just adds costs in terms of maintenance especially if something goes bang.

Also - I would stand a fighting chance of doing an engine swap if I kill an
engine in the 164 - but in a modern car with electronics? No way.

No hat and tie but we do have a mounting for the picnic basket ;)

Subject: Rally Cars for today

You make a lot of sense Brad.
Get rid of all those old Volvos by rallying them I say! Enjoy destroying
them!

Yes, a Datto 1600 was a top rally car, and still would be in the right
company (non turboed, 2 WD's). But why would you slowly destroy a
collectors item trying to stay with 30 year younger technology, in a car
that appreciates with age if kept in good nick?

Old WRX's are also an option too - their price second hand is getting closer
to the same relative price that a '70 Datto 1600 was when Geoff Portman won
the ARC in his 1600, in 1978. Does anyone you reckon you could win an ARC
round in $15000 '94 WRX?

And a question: Do you wear a hat and tie when rallying in your Volvo?
