I suggest using the outer ends of the 1600 auto crossmember and weld these to the centre section of the 180bsss gearbox crossmember.

A suggested way to do this.  Fit the 1600 cross member and measure where to do the two vertical cuts to remove its centre section.  Note that you need to cut on the tunnel side of the exhaust.  Then fit the engine/gearbox with the 180BSSS cross member attached, lift it up under the two refitted 1600 outer cross member sections and mark where to cut the 180BSSS cross member, so it will slip up to the horizontal level of the outer 1600 cross member sections.  It doesnt matter that they dont align front to rear.  Remove the 180SSS cross member and cut in the marked spots.  Replace it on the box and lift it up to the hight where it aligns horizontally with the 2 1600 outer sections.  Tack weld the sections together then remove the new cross member and fully weld, including fitting gussets or fill in gaps where needed.

I actually leave a 2mm gap between the adjacent sections and slip a piece of 2mm plate vertically between each abutting piece, and tack it in.  Then remove and fully weld the crossmember attached to each side of the vertical insert plate, and trim the vertical plate back to the external profile of the butted up pieces.  This looks quite original from underneath (no gussets needed) fills all gaps, and is rarely identified as a modification.  It's also a bloody strong, bolt in crossmember.

Subject: 610 sss 5speed into Auto 510

Hi there, ive searched the archives with little succes. I going to be droping my L18 and 180b sss dogleg 5speed into the auto 510 and i was wondering if theres a standard gbox xmember mod?
Or should i use a combination of 610 xmember and the auto 510 one,?
Or cut up the auto 510 one and mod/weld it to suit?
Or buy some steal plate make a totally custom one?

I havn't bolted the motor/box in as yet but it will be done this week so any help would be greatly appreciated.

thanx and havea good one

Michael
