I was very fortunate that the sprocket just fell off the dowel and not the actual cam, so I didn't lose the chain tensioner. I put it entirely down to assembly technique. I changed the timing chain and realigned the guides a few months ago. I mustn't have done it up tight enough. Typically now everyone says 'oh yeah of course, you gotta put Loctite on the cam bolt!'

Apparently the chain failure problem is pretty common with KA24E pintaras, but my setup is not the same as it uses basically L-series double row timing equipment.

Ah that explains it. I knew you were pretty handy at getting things to go.
Do you put the sprocket loosening down to "assembly technique" - or
something more sinister?

A friend had a KA motor do similar things when the cam drive belt broke on
his U12 Pintara. It stopped quietly leaving his partner by the road side.
It cost him four exhaust valves plus the new belt and gaskets.

700kms. fortunately it died at the turn off before the hay plain. the
cam sprocket fell off the front of the cam and the piston whacked it.
The inlet valves on #2 both survived.
I did get it running again and drove it into Balranald but it really
wouldn't go over 70 clicks.
The #1 inlet runner is full of black soot like an exhaust port. Does
this seem normal? I imagine the exhaust gas was running back up the
runner and out the open inlet valves into the manifold.

As for the fingernail - I washed them before I touched the digital

camera!!

So tell us Zac,
1 Why did the valve hit No1 Piston?
2 In " the olden days" a mere valve hitting a piston and bending

would

simply mean a wayside stop to back off the valve adjustment - and "press

on"

on 3 cyls? How far from Goulburn were you?

OK, it's 7pm. I got the car back at 4:40pm.
Tom and I have it apart and got the valve out already.
