My 5c worth as I had one of his L20B based engines in the 80's. Arthur Jackson built some factory copy engines based on the L18SSS block using 3.5" (88.8mm) bore giving a capacity of 1889cc - these were very popular engines on the local scene in their day. I've never heard of anyone using Holden pistons, rumour at the time suggested that most of the Aussie built 1889cc engines used a forged Mahl piston sourced from a VW engine but it's too long ago for this SOB to remember the exact details.

Terry

Subject: What the?

Hey Honkees,

On Thursday night I was on the jars with some mates celebrating the arrival of my new born when I was introduced to a bloke who reckoned he was a factory Datsun mechanic in the early seventies, and had worked on a number of ‘factory’ rally cars.  We started talking and I realised he was a big talking peanut who was actually an apprentice back then who had cleaned George Fury’s windscreen once (true story).  Anyway he did mention something that I have no idea about and need to check.  He reckoned some Arfa Jackson built racers were the factory 87.8mm bored 1mm oversize and used Holden 186S flat tops.  I have heard about using the rings from the HG Monaro but never the actual slugs.  What piston ht/diameter are these?  Surely this can’t be accurate?

Throw in your 10 cents.  It would be great if it is true as the cost of Holden forgies are much cheaper and you get two spare.

Personally I think it is shit but I really don’t know.

Cheers

Brad
