Kris,

Hope this gets to you in time to save your computer.
Backup all important files from your computer(burn on
CD, magnetic tape or transfer them to another
computer)
Run Chkdsk (you said you are running XP) with the fix
error option.
Do you know the manufacturer of your hard drive? Some
manufacture do have diagnostic tools to test hard
drives.

If this does not work, the altimate option is to
reformat your computer. If you intalls microsoft
products, Win XP, 2000, 2003 server ensure you install
all the updates, the best way to do this is to connect
your computer to the internet and run the windows
update, or download the Microsoft Baseline security
analyzer, install it and run it from your computer.

If your case is not a hard drive failure, then
definately its a spyware(some of them are immune to
antispywares) or a worm!

I decided to use the listing for the sake of other
members.

I sort these well while the victim is on my desk!! 30
min max!

Hi Antony,
No noise from the hard drive but
programs seem to take longer to load, swapping
between windows sometimes leaves bits of the
previous one up for a bit, bits of the XP tool bar
near the clock are missing icons sometimes when i
start up and next time i start up they are back etc.

When i first start up until i can open Outlook
Express up is about 4 mins.

Had trouble when i switched to a different user the
toolbar and desktop icons didn`t appear, just a pix
from my documents. Took 3 attempts to log on with a
different user before it worked.

Talked to a young bloke at work and he said the HD
is slowly dying but couldn`t explain why.

The computer is 4 years old and it has Intel
M/board, P4 1.6ghz, 40gb HD. Running Z/A Security
Suite V6 (got rid of NIS 2005), various anti-spyware
programs etc..

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Please feel free to contact me off list.

Cheers,
                Kris

lots of them, check these sites for help, but most
important is abnormal clicking sound from the
harddrive. What brand is your computer? some
manufacturers (HP) have a testing tool in the bios
setup.

    Hi All,
Sorry for the off topic question, but
are there signs related to hard drives starting to
fail?

    Cheers,
                Kris.
