Kris, Hope this gets to you in time to save your computer. Backup all important files from your computer(burn on CD, magnetic tape or transfer them to another computer) Run Chkdsk (you said you are running XP) with the fix error option. Do you know the manufacturer of your hard drive? Some manufacture do have diagnostic tools to test hard drives.
If this does not work, the altimate option is to reformat your computer. If you intalls microsoft products, Win XP, 2000, 2003 server ensure you install all the updates, the best way to do this is to connect your computer to the internet and run the windows update, or download the Microsoft Baseline security analyzer, install it and run it from your computer. If your case is not a hard drive failure, then definately its a spyware(some of them are immune to antispywares) or a worm! I decided to use the listing for the sake of other members. I sort these well while the victim is on my desk!! 30 min max!
