Hi,

We are considering buying a memcached server with 192 GB of RAM.

Up to now the maximal amount of RAM we used for a single memcached
server was 48 GB, so this is a big jump.

I couldn't find previous experience reports about such big memcached
instances. Is there any technical downside to using one such instance
with so much RAM instead of splitting it across a few smaller servers?
(redundancy is not an issue, we will have multiple servers anyway).
Sagi,

If you have multiple servers anyway, then I don't see a downside.
Another question: does RAM speed make any noticeable performance
difference, e.g. 800Mhz vs. 1333Mhz?
Network, in my experience, is the big determinant. I haven't ever tested the difference with regard to CPU speed, so I can't say for certain. Since memcached isn't a big CPU-intensive app, that isn't something that is usually an issue.
