For the first time, the major Yiddish theatres of the world are coming together in one place, at one time! Nine days and evenings jam-packed with great plays to inspire and entertain you! This Festival is the Segal Centre’s salute to the 50th Anniversary of Montreal’s world–renowned Dora Wasserman Yiddish Theatre. 36 EVENTS IN ALL! Theatre Great classics and modern works! From large scale productions to remarkable solo performances! Dozens of artists share their talents in dramas, musicals and comedies. Plays from the pens of such great Yiddish writers as Singer, Ansky, Gordin and Sholem Aleichem are in the line up. Yiddish theatres performing at the Festival include Israel's Yiddishpiel, France's Der LufTeater, Romania's Jewish State Theatre of Bucharest, Poland's Esther Rokhl and Ida Kaminska State Jewish Theatre, the USA's New Yiddish Rep and Montreal's Dora Wasserman Yiddish Theatre. Individual artists will also be coming from Austria and Australia. Symposium In partnership with McGill University's Jewish Studies Department, the finest scholars of Yiddish theatre will gather at the Segal during the Festival. Fascinating topics presented by brilliant minds! Hear from Joel Berkowitz, Dov-ber Kerler, Jean-Marc Larrue, Sonia Sarah Lypsic, Allan L. Nadler, Eugene Orenstein, Edward Portnoy, Alyssa Quint, Nahma Sandrow, Michael Steinlauf, Jeffrey Veidlinger and keynote speaker, Seth Wolitz. Cinema The Segal Centre's CinemaSpace presents a delightful series of Yiddish theatre films as part of the Festival. You will find everything from a 2008 Yiddish feature film from Israel to the last Yiddish film made in Poland in 1948. Also in the Film Festival line-up are recently restored classics, contemporary documentaries on Yiddish theatre and filmed plays. An array of special guest speakers, including film directors, will provide stimulating insights. Outdoor ZumerFest Montrealers and tourists of all backgrounds can enjoy a free afternoon concert of Yiddish music and dance under the summer sky. Performers from around the world will entertain and share their joy of Yiddish culture. This is also an afternoon for the whole family, with puppeteers, crafts, Yiddish songs for kids, face painting and fun! Music, Exhibits and More The festival will be the hub for great music! Enjoy Yiddish music of yesteryear and of today, from cutting edge Klezmer to Yiddish theatre songs from Yiddish jazz to classical works by Jewish composers. In partnership KlezKanada, there will be nightly KlezKaberets. For classical music lovers, Musica Camerata presents a chamber concert of Jewish composers from France, Italy, Canada and the USA. Exhibits will be on display from the Dora Wasserman Yiddish Theatre Archives, the Jewish Public Library and the participating Yiddish theatres. A 50th anniversary weekend reunion of the Dora Wasserman Yiddish Theatre on June 19-21 as well as theatre workshops and public lectures are just some of the exciting events at the Festival.
