Mendele Personal Notices & Announcements January 17, 2012
To minimize wear and tear on the untershames, three requests: 1. Send time-sensitive notices well in advance. 2. Send material as plain text: no HTML, other coding, or attachments;and write MENDELE PERSONALS in the subject line. 3. Correspond directly with the person who or organization which has posted the notice, *not* with your ever-beleaguered untershames. _______________________________________________________________________ Date: Sat, 14 Jan 2012 15:17:38 -0500 From: Bennett Muraskin <[email protected]> Subject: Guide to Yiddish Short Stories The Association of Jewish Libraries and Ben Yehuda Press have published The Association of Jewish Libraries Guide to Yiddish Short Stories by Bennett Muraskin. This guide is a reference to 135 Yiddish short stories in English translation. Organized topically, it provides plot summaries and both the English and original Yiddish sources. The Guide also includes biographical sketches of the 43 authors whose stories are cited and a comprehensive Introduction, previously posted on this list, on the history of the translation of Yiddish literature into English in the US. It is the only such guide in existence. Yiddish scholars Sheva Zucker and Barnett Zumoff and leader of the International Association of Yiddish Clubs Philip "Fishl" Kutner have praised the book as an excellent resource for teachers, program directors and students of Yiddish literature, from synagogues to JCCs to Jewish schools and adult education programs. Bennett Muraskin is also the author of Let Justice Well Up Like Water: Progressive Jews from Hillel to Helen Suzman (2004) and Humanist Readings in Jewish Folklore (2001). He conducts the "In Memoriam" column for Jewish Currents magazine. The book is available for $14.95 from the Ben Yehuda Press web site www.benyehudapress.com and other online retailers ______________________________________________________________________ Please do not use the "reply" key when writing to Mendele.
