Peretz Folk School Yiddish Teaching Fellowship, University of Manitoba The University of Manitoba seeks an enthusiastic self-starter who is fluent in Yiddish, loves Yiddish and wants to teach and promote it. A two-year fellowship beginning July 1, 2012 will give the successful candidate opportunities to teach Yiddish and develop appreciation and cultural awareness at two academic institutions and in the Winnipeg community. This unique fellowship builds on the city of Winnipeg's tradition as a centre of Yiddish life and will contribute to the ongoing revitalization of Yiddish language and culture. The University of Manitoba offers this fellowship in cooperation with the Judaic Studies Program, the Gray Academy of Jewish Education (Winnipeg's Jewish high school, which currently has forty students taking Yiddish) and the I.L. Peretz Folk School Endowment Trust. The Peretz Fellow will be able to build on existing Yiddish cultural activity in Winnipeg, including The Next Generation and Etz Chayim Yiddish Groups, the UNESCO-recognized Winnipeg Yiddish Womens' Reading Circle, the Winnipeg Jewish Radio Hour, and the Mameloshen Festival. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to: --Teach Yiddish and offer extracurricular Yiddish activities for high school students at the Gray Academy --Develop and teach a second-year Yiddish course at the University of Manitoba (for students who have taken the existing first-year Yiddish course or studied Yiddish at the Gray Academy) --Develop an integrated Yiddish language curriculum for the Gray Academy and University of Manitoba --Optionally, engage with the Winnipeg community to promote Yiddish and create Yiddish events, programming, and learning opportunities. The Peretz Fellow may also wish to conduct Yiddish-related research; if so, Winnipeg offers many human and archival resources. This two-year appointment will begin on July 1, 2012, and carries an annual stipend of $40,000 (Canadian). The successful candidate will be fluent in Yiddish, have teaching competence in Yiddish language and literature, and hold a minimum of an MA in Jewish Studies or another field in the Humanities. The University of Manitoba encourages applications from qualified women and men, including members of visible minorities, Aboriginal peoples, and persons with disabilities. All qualified candidates are encouraged to apply; however, Canadians and permanent residents will be given priority.
