The book was launched on August 12 of this year, at a 150-strong event in London commemorating the Soviet Yiddish writers and other members of the Jewish Anti-Facist Committee killed by Stalin 60 years ago to the day. The book comprises a long introduction by Joseph Sherman, essays on each of the writers covered and material in translation from the work of Dovid Bergelson, Peretz Markish, David Hofshteyn, Der Nister, Leyb Kvitko and Izi Kharik. The translations cover various forms of work including socialist realism and modernist literature, and includes a full translation (by Seth Wolitz) of Troyer (Grief) by Hofshteyn, illustrated by some of the original drawings by Chagall. >From Revolution to Repression (287 pages, 978 1 907869 570, £9.99) is available from bookshops and Amazon, but those outside of the UK will find it cheapest to order from www.bookdepository.co.uk which offers free postage. __________________________________________________________ Please do not use the "reply" key when writing to Mendele.
