Mendele Personal Notices and Announcements Jan. 30, 2016
To minimize wear and tear on the untershames, three requests: 1. Send time-sensitive notices well in advance. 2. Send material as plain text to victor.bers at yale.edu as plain text (no HTML, other coding, or attachments) and write MENDELE PERSONALS in the subject line. 3. Correspond directly with the person who or organization which has posted the notice, *not* with your ever-beleaguered untershames. _______________________________________ Vilnius Summer Program in Yiddish 17 July — 12 August 2016 at the Vilnius Yiddish Institute at Vilnius University The summer of 2016 marks the eighteenth year of the Vilnius Summer Program in Yiddish (the one-month European Summer Program in Yiddish, founded at Oxford in 1982 and relocated to Vilnius in 1998). The program's four courses in Yiddish language and literature, ranging from beginners (Yiddish I) through to advanced (Yiddish IV), are university accredited. The three higher level courses are conducted entirely in Yiddish. All four courses aim at increasing mastery of Yiddish, as well as the complex of cultural nuances and historical phenomena that are embedded in the language. They meet five mornings weekly for three hours. To receive the completion certificate and university credit, students must attend the entire four-week course and complete daily homework assignments. In addition, there will be a rich program of cultural activities, historical walks, concerts, workshops, seminars, panels and the renowned shabes-tish. There will be a visit to a former shtetl with its old-time features still partly in evidence. Home to the program is a city that was, before the war, one of the most vibrant centers of Yiddish culture. On walkabouts you will discover the city of the Gaon of Vilna, the Brothers Romm, Max Weinreich, Moyshe Kulbak, Avrom Sutzkever and many other giants of Vilna Yiddish culture. You will see the sites of the Gaon‘s tomb, Ramailes yeshiva, Israel Salanter‘s studyhouse, Kletskin‘s publishing house, the YIVO and many more.
