Ohai! So as it turns out Chef's server gem depends on "merb-core". Merb version 1.1.1's merb-core/lib/merb-core.rb has "require bundler", though this was supposedly removed on April 2 (commit f06e0232). Yet the gem clearly has this in the merb-core.rb file:
ubu...@ip-10-251-66-85:~$ gem list merb-core *** LOCAL GEMS *** merb-core (1.1.1) ubu...@ip-10-251-66-85:~$ grep "bundler" /usr/lib/ruby/gems/1.8/gems/merb-core-1.1.1/lib/merb-core.rb require "bundler" And the merb-core gem does not depend on bundler, so Chef Server fails to start up since bundler is not installed by default. Yes, installing bundler fixes the problem, but it shouldn't have to be installed separately for it to work, especially since that should have been patched out.
