URBAN MYTH - STUFF AND NONSENSE!! CR*P! B*LONEY!!

My son and I have ALWAYS driven around our 123 300D and 300TD daily
drivers with heavily laden key chains and have not had to change a
single tumbler in a combined 20 years of motoring!!

I will opine that it has more to do with how carelessley you insert
the key and turn it...

There IS a high correlation between heavy key rings AND premature tumbler failure going back at LEAST 50 years. Mercedes has written at least one TSB about it (can't find one of those right now - I think there was more than one). It was first pointed out to me by a Mercedes trained master mechanic more than 40 years ago. That yours has not failed may be good luck or just because your lock mechanisms were the sturdier ones from the lot!

Tumbler failure is NOT the only problem that can jam the ignition/steering lock and MANY of the problems discussed are clearly not just the tumbler failing. It is doubtful (to ME) that these other failures are influenced much or even at all by key chain weight!
