of course he knows he described himself.  it's what is called the "double
standard"

ok, mary goes to lou grant asking for a raise and is denied.  she has no
idea why and begins to question whether there was some element of her work
that is lacking.  lou assures her that it isn't that.  mary is stumped.

"mr. grant, why can't i get a raise"
