Ummm, go back the CIA meddling in Iran in the 50s. Then note how the British mucked about there before that. Yes the western world paid for all the extraction of the oil but the Iranians were paid an insultingly paltry sum for the material. We (the western world, the British get a good piece of the blame) were stealing their oil.
I'm also given to understand that some of Carter's meddling pretty much marched the Soviets into Afghanistan. We supported the Mujahadin (sp) which of course mutated into the Taliban and we can see how well that worked out for us. Don't forget our building Saddam in Iraq... Face it, we meddle in the Middle East and bad things happen to us. Look if I poke a hornet's nest the hornets come out and sting me. Why does it surprise us when this happens in the Middle East? Why do we keep poking that stupid hornets nest? Why do we think that for some crazy reason we'll do better this time? Even the money produced by the oil while we are in Iran is going back into the iranian general fund.
