Magic. Honestly I don't have the slightest idea but I've seen something very similar in my '96 Dodge Dakota. I had new tires put on once that were smaller than the old ones making the speedo read high, but like you when testing with a GPS the odo read very close to correct. Wierdest thing I've ever seen.
