Success! I dug into my bag of newly-purchased pipe fittings and found
that the best choices were the 1-1/2" and 2" galvanized pipe sections.
I cut a length of 1-1/2" sufficient to extend from the ridge of the
ball joint to above the post, approximately the same length as the
32mm socket I'd tried before, and set it over the ball joint. Too big
in diameter, but not by much. I slit down its side with the cutoff
saw and hammered the gap shut using the anvil and the V-block face of
one of the jack stands. Still too big, so I cut another slit and
repeated the exercise. There, it was just about perfect. I welded up
the slot and ground the bead off down where the end needed to go
through the wishbone socket. I then cut off a short section of the 2"
pipe, it was about perfect as-is. I put the 2" on the bottom for the
ball joint to drop into and applied the big Harbor Freight C clamp.
Once I got it all aligned and a bit of pressure on it I sprayed some
PB Blaster into the gap and then hit the wishbone socket with the
propane torch. Once the penetrant started boiling in the gap I then
applied the wrench in earnest, and the ball joint just pushed right
out. And I was out of time, again.
