(Aha, finally a topic I know something about...)

Loren, you won't be towing anything much bigger than a Radio Flyer
wagon at highway speeds with a first generation Trooper. The analogy
to an old Jeep is apt. They're crude and uncomfortable on pavement,
but extremely capable off-road. For $1-2K you should be able to find
a decent second generation Trooper ('92-'99) which is a far more
modern design and pretty much a better vehicle in every way save
mechanical simplicity and perhaps character (think 123 vs 124). It's
fairly comfortable onroad and a mountain goat off.

The second generation has an Isuzu (not GM) V6 with double the
horsepower of the first generation. However, the towing capacity
you'd need is still not there. I have towed a Saab 900 on a dolly
with my '93 and felt that was pretty much at the limit of what it
could safely pull. But an SDL weighs a lot more than an old Saab, and
a proper car trailer weighs a lot more than a dolly. For that reason
I recently replaced the Trooper for towing/hauling jobs with an '00
half-ton Suburban (which, BTW, has half again as much power as the
Trooper, gets about the same mileage, and can hold a sheet of plywood
in the back with the gate closed to keep out the constant Oregon rain
on winter runs to Home Depot).
