If I get it running it will be for the wife, and I will take back over the SD until the motor finally blows up in that. Then I will either drop that 603 engine (if its a good one) in, or search for a 606 turbo engine to drop in it.

Pull off the rocker cover and you should see the broken guide to confirm the cause, then see if all the valves are valving. I doubt that there is a piston meets valve event, far as I know a motor with a bent valve will not turn over, unless it has done big damage, like a hole in the piston but that is unlikely unless the motor was doing high revs. Further if the chain jumped enough to bent a valve/put a hole in a piston then the other valves will be making contact as the motor turns. Of course you won't be telling the seller that. Then the next course of action I would pursue would be to pull the front cover off and check that everything is still intact (or at the very least make sure the chain tensioner is not damaged), then do a compression check to determine if the head has to come off. If compression is good, fix the front end and replace/repair the rocker cover and then flog it off to one of the natives for a profit, or drive it around feeling superior to the peasants in their E classes, perhaps buy the missus a chauffeurs hat.

disassembly of what, the front cover or the heads?

How loose is loose, there may well be a little slack sometimes, that makes a chain feel loose. I think it is caused by the motor slightly turning backwards after it is shut off. Sort of like a bit of back pressure form a compression stroke. I guess even a back turn of half a degree would make a timing chain appear loose. If the chain is loose whilst a bit of pressure is put on the engine (like putting a socket on the front of the engine and turning it slightly), then I would say the tensioner is shot or other evil is happening. Not sure exactly how it works but the tensioner can move back a bit to allow the chain to drag that piece of guide rail over the cam sprocket, anyway disassembly and inspection is required, or Kaleb can just patch it up and sell it to some sucker.
