There is truth to the rumor. The Jeep Liberty was slated to take the place of the aging Wrangler but Daimler misunderstood the Wrangler's following in this country. When news got out there was almost a revolt amongst Jeep owners and Daimler quickly back pedaled. By then the Liberty was already out on the street and it became the next Jeep model, not the Wrangler and not the Cherokee but something in between.
