Vacuum lines! We lined up a 1983 TD and 1985 300 CD turbodiesel to diagnose

and you wouldn't believe the complexity of the vacuum lines in the 1985
300CD vs. the 1983 300TD! It was almost like comparing a Model T cockpit to
a new BMW. Are all those extra plastic spaghetti strands solely for the
purpose of advanced vacuum control of the improved 1985 transmission?
Otherwise, the two cars are comparably equipped and quite similar.

Or more interesting, I changed the oil last night in the 87 300D and noticed
a disconnected vacuum line. Grabbed the keys to the 87 300TD to compare,
and noticed that the factory looms were routed way different. Because of this,
the lengths of the hoses were different.

Caught me off guard for a minute, but the color coding pointed me in the right
direction. Car seems to shift a lot better now, we'll see if it fixes
the flaring in the 2-3 shift.

Moral of the story: I guess same year same engine same chassis (both 124) isn't enough similarity...

There are OFTEN mid model year revisions. Sometimes it requires the VIN number to be sure (and that isn't always foolproof) and many of the smallest changes aren't included in ANY service literature.
