Hi Randy,
Great suggestion!! As luck would have it while flipping thru a magazine called Panorama (the Porsche club magazine) , I noticed an ad for custom rod ends and sperical bearings (www.hirschmannusa.com) - as you suggested, some machining might be required but I may end up with something even better than before.

Since the IP end of the rod is a ball/socket fitting I'm hoping it's still available allowing me to renew that fitting also. Then, (after taking some careful measurements) I may be able to have the other end machined to accept male threads and buy a rod end that can screw on. If that doesn't work I could use the measurements to have a new rod made - it's only complicated at the IP end and that could be cut & welded to a new piece.

Thanks again for the suggestion - I may end up with a part *better* than the one MB provided!

Of course, a used one that's intact would be nice as it would allow us to drive while the new part was being engineered!

;-)

Sincerely,

Don't know exactly what this looks like but if push comes to shove, could
you use a heim joint type setup and make something that was at least as good
or maybe even better? Might require a bit of engineering and the assistance
of a machinist but shouldn't keep you off the road for long.

Howdy -
Got some bad news from Mercedes today. My '78 240D needs the control rod
that goes from the IP to the auto transmission. The bushing at the auto
transmission end has left the premises. Unfortunately, MB no longer makes
that part available!! I find it outrageous that MB would stop offering
the parts we need to keep their cars on the road! Especially when they make
such a big deal about the million mile cars they like to advertise!
